Boats that are far ahead of their time in advance < br> The hand wedge of the Stone Age, the pyramids of the Pharaohs - every epoch has its landmarks.

For the Viking Age it was the dragon boats. Some claim that without these ships the Viking Age could not have existed. In fact, they are masterpieces of shipbuilding that have shaped European shipbuilding for centuries.

Robust enough to withstand the high seas, yet shallow enough to navigate far upstream and penetrate deep into the continents, the exceptionally mobile longboats are ideal vehicles for conquerors, explorers and merchants. With their colourfully striped sails, their splendidly carved dragonheads, their swans and other water birds, they are the pride of their crews and hurry as if flying over the oceans.

SAGENUMWOBENE REICHTÜMER
Through their conquests and trade journeys, the Vikings accumulate enormous riches.

Thus, extensive hoards of silver are recovered up to the present time. Among the Viking women, pearls made of rock crystal and carnelian, which mostly comes from the Black Sea region, are very popular. The arts and crafts reached a heyday: splendid carvings and sophisticated, extremely filigree gold and silversmith works were created.

At first glance, the patterns often appear purely ornamental; at second glance, they show animal representations of astonishing expressiveness. Jewellery and art objects are often inspired by the magical power of runic writing.

audacity and daring < br> "The Vikings are coming!" - this cry of terror spreads like wildfire along Europe's coasts from about 800 onwards.

For woe betide the northmen if they are not out to trade, but to prey! By their irrepressible courage, their irrepressible strength and their mercilessness, the giants armed with battle axes and swords are among the most fearsome warriors of all time. Among themselves they are connected by strict oaths of allegiance. Legendary is the frenzy of battle, into which their elite fighters, the Berserkers, get into.

According to the Sagas, they always stand at the bow of the ship, the most dangerous place in battle. Just as impressive as the wildness of the Vikings is their skill in handling weapons. The Vlfberht sword, forged with incomparable mastery, is in great demand - nowhere else in Europe have so many of these unique swords been found as in Scandinavia and on the Baltic coast.

In the Viking age, a voyage to the open sea is a challenge that requires a great deal of courage to master.

In Nordic mythology, the earth is still regarded as a disc and perhaps the journey into unknown waters ends in the abyss. In addition there is the dreaded elemental force of the sea with storms, lightning, thunder and giant waves. And where to turn when everything you know disappears behind the horizon?

Do the stars give orientation, does a solar stone serve as a compass? With daring and skill, the Vikings succeed in what should be possible much later with advanced navigation: Around the year 1000, 500 years before Christopher Columbus, Leif Eriksson "the Happy" is the first European to enter American soil in "Vinland".
