With the Patron of Art Edition of 2018, Montblanc honours King Ludwig II of Bavaria.

He is regarded as a passionate art lover and patron of music and was the builder of the castles Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee. This is the origin of the term "fairy-tale king" or "swan king".

The first opera Ludwig attended was Richard Wagner's "Lohengrin" and was to shape him forever. He brought Wagner to his court and the swan became Ludwig's trademark. The swan, symbolically exalted by the Lohengrin legend and later ubiquitous in Ludwig's castles, inspired the design of the edition.

The skeleton design of the Patron of Art Homage to Ludwig II Limited Edition 888 with birds and floral motifs is inspired by the wall paintings of the elaborately designed throne room in Neuschwanstein.

The fascinating 750 solid gold edition is punched out to reveal the transparent white lacquer underneath. It is complemented by a fine platinum-plated swan-shaped clip and fittings decorated with engravings.

The cap ring is decorated with a circular ruby and the cap head is adorned with the Montblanc emblem made of precious mother-of-pearl as a reference to the magnificent furnishings with which the king provided each of his castles.

The fine engraving WWV 75 on the cap ring, the reference code of the Lohengrin opera in the Wagner Works Directory, is another reference to the Swan Knight saga. This engraving is framed by the well-known quote: "It is necessary to create Paradise".

In addition to his enthusiasm for Wagner, Ludwig developed an inexorably growing passion for building. A fine engraving on the 18-K bicolor gold nib of the fountain pen recalls the world-famous Neuschwanstein fairytale castle he built.
