Montblanc Elixir Colorist Collection Tintenflakon

  • Montblanc Elixir Colorist Collection Tintenflakon

In ancient times, pure dyes were extracted from mussels and plants and these were processed into highly intense colors.

With the Elixir Colorist Collection, Montblanc is demonstrating its reference to this manufacturing method. The inks in the Elexir Colorist Collection are based on natural dyes derived from plants.

The Elixir Colorist Collection includes three inks: Pourpre (purple red), Azure (azure blue) and Violet de Cobalt (purple).

Purple red dates back to 1400 BC and was extracted by the Phoenicians from rare sea snails. It quickly became the colour of kings and nobles and is mentioned in the Odyssey of Homer, the Old Testament and Virgil. The ink recipe used by Montblanc contains the pure colour extract from the cochineal scale insect.

The colour azure blue was first used in Cyprus around 300 B.C. and spread throughout the world by the Egyptians. In the Middle Ages azure blue was also made from lapis lazuli and was used by nobles and kings. Montblanc uses dyes from gardenia and safflower for the ink.

Violet de Cobalt is one of the oldest colors used by humans. Handpaintings with this color on cave walls are estimated at an age of about 50,000 years. The permanent dye for this was created by mixing natural pigments with ground amethyst. Montblanc uses a special garden extract for this ink.
